Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
Sorry unless you have some kind of agenda I fail how you can criticise Sam over this?

I have seen plenty of these players and be it in performances for the Development squad or out on loan and NONE have done little to suggest they are of Premier League quality so I totally have no problem with the fact Sam has rarely thought any of them where worthy of inclusion in the 1st team squad and they are being released.

Let's have a dose of perspective in that even the best crop of kids will still see the majority released without getting close to their 1st team and yet somehow expectations are higher from what has always been at best a pretty average set of boys?

Personally I think over the last decade our whole Youth set up has been left behind by other London Premier League clubs and can only hope the current owners are more ambitious than than Mr Brown was.

They should for as many say the new batch inc Oxford, Pask, Borg etc is quite promising. The exact same words where being uttered about Turgott, Chambers, Fanimo etc 2-3 years ago.

The development from 16 onwards has been terrible both from a player/coaching viewpoint.

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
I can't be bothered to be honest, at U21 level we need players ready to step up to the first team or show they could. At U14 we should be looking at technique and working on that.

Unfortunately young players have outside influences although we don't give too many chances it's the modern game. If we lose a few on the trot then questions are asked. Our club needs top level football for the move, only the very best young players will get the chance in the first team. Quite a few have been on loan and haven't made headlines.

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
If you can be bothered I've answered that further down the thread. Feel free to read if you're bored. But basically Winning games is down on list of priorities of a Development squad.

Not that I'm suggesting they are all brilliant. Most of this released are right to be released. But something is wrong somewhere when no players are getting chances.

I blame football as a whole as much as I do Sam. In fact he has my sympathy to a large extent

Course it matters, if they're not good enough then what is the club supposed to do. I've been out all day and not read this thread.

They are bottom of the u21 dev league having lost 8 out of 12.

Perhaps they're just not very good.

Sam isn't getting the blame is he?

And what does it matter how they are getting on?

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
Not sure it's right that Sam gets the blame here, if they were good enough he would play them. How are the dev squad getting on this season?

Mr Polite 8:44 Wed Jan 28
Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
Some do yes, but it is to make numbers up in an 11 aside game more than developing the kids.

In the run up to a game the starting 11 will play as one team against a team made up of rest of squad and some Development squad players who lineup as they expect our opponents to

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
Do the Development squad players train with the first team?

This is the way that they would improve but it probably doesn't happen given the size of the first team squad.

If the Dev Squad are training and playing within their own group thenis it a surprise that they do not develop as people would like them too?

What I believe is that if young players are going to make it then they need to break through by 19-20 at the latest. Too often at West H am we have spoken about players having potential when they are about 22-23.

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
currently there is no point us having a youth/academy system. the manager could not give a flying fck.

sam had a chance to get some kids on the bench/involve them more when we were safe 2 years ago and apart from hanging 7/8 of them out to dry in one off cup games v wigan and notts forest, they have been well and truly fckd.

matt taylor, job, jussi, nolan, rvt, maiga keeping out kids tells you how shit the kids have been or how crap bfs has been in having any intent to develop our academy.

under zola and a financial shit storm, the kids developed & saved us for 2 years. with loads of cash, bfs has got us into a great position. i just think its a shame that more of the kids cannot be around song, sakho and AC at the moment. for example, rvt & kung fu JOB could have been faked off in august as they have been nothing more than bench warmers.

bring on darren sick note fletcher …short term gain for sam, just wants his new contract.

Sad to see. But not a surprise. The dropping of the academy commitments in the updated pledges to supporters is another indication.

He grew up in Peckham. Anton played for Athenlay in Peckham, not sure about where Rio played.

Peckham is where I'm referring to... and I'm talking about the last 10 years, not back then (was using Rio just as a geographical point of reference!).

#When I say the same applies to scouting, I mean in relation to use of old networks, not about the ethnicity of scouts or the people they sign.

Paul McCallum could be hit with at least a four-match ban following his dismissal against Southend.

The on-loan striker was shown a straight red in stoppage time during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat after appearing as a substitute.

He will now face an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct.

In addition, the Football Association charged the striker with improper conduct.

It is alleged the 21-year-old made contact with referee Lee Collins following his issuing of the red card.

McCallum has until 6pm tomorrow to answer the charge.

Regardless of his plea, he will then face an independent commission who will examine the allegations.

As the charge of improper conduct is termed a ‘non-standard’ offence, there is no set sanction to be applied.

It will be left in the hands of the commission, but McCallum can expect the minimum of an additional one-match ban if found guilty.

An FA spokesman said: ‘Paul McCallum has been given a three-match ban for violent conduct.

‘However, there is there is also a separate charge on the back of his dismissal.

‘It is alleged his behaviour following his dismissal amounted to improper conduct

‘He has until 6pm tomorrow to answer the charge.’

Presently, the loanee from West Ham will miss Saturday’s trip to Wycombe as well as Hartlepool (January 31), Dagenham & Redbridge (February 10) and Exeter (February 14).

If guilty, he may also miss Cambridge (February 21).

Re: Youngsters depart from the Hammers
Mr P

Actually I generally do just that.

It doesn't change the fact that West Ham are non-existent as far as I can see.

Many clubs are reliant on scouts that they've been using for years and then sons of scouts... same areas they've been recruiting from etc. Millwall were the same and then changed their set up and instead of just recruiting from outer suburbs and Kent they are now recruiting more locally. Maybe this is not the case with West Ham but it seems likely.

The recent study into lack of black coaches being under-represented at clubs made the point that clubs don't fail to appoint black coaches because of racism but they tend to recruit by word of mouth and through existing networks they've had for years. This generally means old "white" networks. I think the same applies to scouting, in fact I know it does from what coaches working at other pro-clubs tell me.

Again, I don't know anyone at West Ham so maybe this doesn't apply to WHU.
